Nizhny Novgorod , formerly Gorkyor Gorki city, is the capital of the Nizhny Novgorod region and the administrative center of the Volga district situated on the Volga and Oka rivers.
Contaminant Type, Source & Quantity
Four tons of toxic chemicals are stored in a dilapidated warehouse in the Soviet District of Nizhny Novgorod. Data provided by the Committee for Environmental Protection and Nature Management and the Center of State Sanitary and Epidemiological Monitoring of Nizhny Novgorod shows that a critical environmental situation has been reached here. According to the Volga Center for Environmental Health, toxic chemicals in the warehouse include trichlorfon, zineb and other unknown chemicals.

Data about the health effects of the population exposed to the chemicals were unavailable. However exposure to DDT and DDE can result in the following:
The warehouse's proximity to densely populated areas and the Rahma River that flows into the Volga River is of particular concern. Also there is no security and it is easily accessible to the public.
